[Laboratory X - Anthophytes, Glossopterids and Others]

Objective: In this lab you study some Paleozoic and Mesozoic seed plants that have been proposed as close relatives of the flowering plants, and to examine fossils of early true angiosperms themselves. We will also look at the living group most closely related to the angiosperms. Your task is to think of these plants in a phylogenetic way -- be on the lookout for putative synapomorphies, homologies, homoplasy, and plesiomorphic traits! Also consider the biogeography of each group of plants and compare them. Does the paleobiogeographical pattern match the phylogenetic pattern?
