[Laboratory VIII - Medullosans and Cycads]

Objective: In this laboratory you will become familiar with the anatomy, morphology, and some aspects of the biology of an extinct group of Paleozoic seed plants -- the Medullosans -- and a group of extant seed plants -- the cycads. Phylogenetically these are sister groups and so we consider them together. Medullosans and cycads were important components of the upper Paleozoic and Mesozoic ecosystems, respectively. Be on the lookout for synapomorphies that might unite these two groups, as well as characters that argue against a close relationship! Compare their spatial and temporal ranges.
