Objective: The origin of the seed habit as a reproductive strategy may be second only to the evolution of vascular tissue on the Top Ten Events in Land Plant Evolution. To understand the origin of seeds we have to step back to the Early Devonian to consider some of the free-sporing plants sister to the seed plants. These Devonian plants will give us insight into the morphological transformations leading to the seed habit.
