Earth's History

National Standards State Standards SFUSD Standards
D2a* The earth processes we see today, including erosion, movement of lithospheric plates, and changes in atmospheric composition, are similar to those that occurred in the past. Earth history is also influenced by occasional catastrophes, such as the impact of an asteroid or comet. 7.4a. Earth processes today are similar to those that occurred in the past and slow geologic processes have large cumulative effects over long periods of time.

7.4b. the history of life of Earth has been disrupted by major catastrophic events, such as major volcanic eruptions or the impact of an asteroid.

D2b* Fossils provide important evidence of how life and environmental conditions have changed. 7.4. Evidence from rocks allows us to understand the evolution of life on Earth.

7.4e. fossils provide evidence of how life and environmental conditions have changed.

Content Standard 15 (partial): Students understand that the fossil record documents the appearance, diversification, relationships, and extinction of many living things in relation to changes through earth's history and that living things are classified by considering their evolutionary relationships.
NOT PRESENT IN NATIONAL STDS 7.4d. evidence from geologic layers and radioactive dating indicate the Earth is approximately 4.6 billion years old, and that life has existed for more than 3 billion years.

7.4f. how movements of the Earth's continental and oceanic plates through time, with associated changes in climate and geographical connections, have affected the past and present distribution of organisms.

7.4g. how to explain significant developments and extinctions of plant and animal life on the geologic time scale.
