Research: "I study microscopic fossils, with particular interest in foraminifera and ostracodes."

Why microfossils? "Microfossils are wonderful subjects because a small sample often yields an abundance of complete specimens, and they are extremely useful indicators of age and environment. Such interpretations are vital to many research projects. For example, I've been studying some late Miocene material from Chile that contains shallow-marine mollusks. My foram analysis enabled me to restrict the age to the base of the late Miocene and determine deposition in a deep coastal basin — the mollusks had been displaced more than 1000 meters downslope!"

About UCMP: Ken joined the UCMP staff as manager of microfossil collections in July 2002. "I find it very exciting to work with the collections, as I get a firsthand view of species that I've only seen illustrations of and I get to look at slides from many classic studies. I've always enjoyed the curation aspect of paleontology and this job also gives me the opportunity to take my research in just about any direction it wants to go."
