C. Deposition

  1. Any time moving water slows down, it drops or deposits some of its sediment.
  2. Landforms created by river deposition:
  3. a. Delta

Deposit formed when a river flows into a body of water.

    b. Alluvial fan

Fan-shaped deposit formed where a stream leaves a mountain range.

    c. Point bar

Formed by deposition on the inside bend of a meander where the water moves most slowly.

    d. Floodplain

Wide flat area adjacent to river that is covered by water and sediment when the river overflows its banks. Humans like to live in floodplains due to their flat topography and fertile soils.
