Students are presented with a choice of four different pathways to explore: Biodiversity, Geologic Time, Past Lives, or Paleoecology. Students can select their own pathway(s), or the teacher can designate particular pathways to individuals, partners, or teams.
In each section, students move at a self-selected pace through the screens by clicking on “more” buttons and “next” buttons, doing activities, or answering questions. If students select an incorrect response to a question, they are taken to a page that gives some brief information and asks them to try again. If they select the correct response, they automatically move to the next page. A final "quiz" at the end checks student comprehension.
At the bottom left of each page, an oval icon identifies the current section. Students can click on the section icon to return to the main student page at any time.
