TAXONOMIC STRUCTURE

Taxonomic conventions for extant taxa: Mammal Species of the World (Wilson and Reeder, 1993) provided the basis for standardizing the names for most extant mammals. However, in some cases (e.g., felids), Honacki et al. (1982) was preferred over Wilson and Reeder. (Faunmap Working Group 1994:26)

Taxonomic conventions for extinct taxa: Pleistocene Mammals of North America (Kurtén and Anderson, 1980) served as the basic taxonomic reference for most extinct mammal taxa.
