UCMP MYSTERY FOSSIL #15 is . . .
Monograptus

UCMP Mystery Fossil Number 15

Monograptus is a graptolite, a member of the hemichordata, a small but important phylum in the study of vertebrate evolution. Fossils of graptolites are found only in rocks of Ordovician and Silurian age, making them excellent index fossils. It is thought that graptolites were planktonic, floating or slowly sinking through the water—some may have kept buoyant with gas-filled sacs. Read more about these interesting animals here.
