Lobaria is a lichen, and you can understand why lichen fossils are rare when you consider that their greatest numbers are found in mountain, desert and tundra environments, where they are unlikely to be buried and preserved. A lichen is unusual in that it is made up of two types of organisms, a fungus and an alga. Read more about lichens here.
