Lepidodendron


UCMP Mystery Fossil Number 7 No, it’s not the wire mesh you find in those older plastered walls. This is a portion of the scaly trunk (the fossil mold and cast are pictured) of Lepidodendron, a lycophyte from the Carboniferous Period. Extensive “forests” of these organisms created the coal beds of the eastern United States and Europe. You can find out more about lycophytes here or at UCMP’s Virtual Paleobotany Lab.
