UCMP Mystery Fossil Number 8 It may be reminiscent of the figure in Edvard Munch’s painting, “The Scream,” but what we’re looking at here is the reproductive structure (perithecium) of a fungus! Fungi don’t get the respect they deserve; after all, they’ve been around since the Vendian Period—and that ended over 540 million years ago! Find out more about fungi in the fossil record here.
