UCMP Mystery Fossil Number 9 Our hard-to-pronounce Mystery Fossil is a kind of cyanobacteria, or “blue-green algae”—it is not a Tootsie Roll. Hard to believe that bacteria can leave fossils at all, but they do. Cyanobacteria, which tend to be larger than other bacteria, may secrete a thick cell wall and sometimes form colonial mats.
