The exploded Triceratops

We came across this weathered Triceratops skull near the top of the Hell Creek Formation in McCone County. It had been exposed to the elements for many years, and was bleached and blasted. Although it is always exciting to find a dinosaur, we left this one in the field. For one thing, we would have no way to excavate something this big and get it home! Also, Triceratops is a common vertebrate fossil in this area, and there are many better specimens already.
