UCMP’s summer field adventures (cont.)

Early Cretaceous dinosaurs
This past May, Dave Smith joined UCMP Research Associate Des Maxwell of the University of the Pacific and a handful of other experienced volunteers for two weeks of prospecting near the tiny town of Edgar, Montana. Maxwell has a special interest in the dinosaurs of the Early Cretaceous and has spent many summers exploring outcrops of the Cloverly Formation in and around the Bridger-Edgar area. This past May, Maxwell and crew continued their search for new fossils, hoping to expand their knowledge of the Early Cretaceous fauna in this region. A good portion of a Zephyrosaurus (a small bipedal herbivore) was collected and seven tenontosaurs (fairly large, primarily bipedal herbivores) in varying degrees of articulation, were discovered.
