HOW TO USE MIOMAP/FAUNMAP

Sample maps

There are TWO ways to use MIOMAP/FAUNMAP to produce interactive maps of geographic occurrences of mammal taxa:

1) Query List
Enter specific information into a form to generate a map.

2) Interactive Mapping Interface
Pick Points directly from the Map to find specific localities.

QUERY LIST:

  1. Go to the Query List Page

  2. Select the database you wish to search from the pulldown menu (MIOMAP, FAUNMAP, or MIOMAP/FAUNMAP)

  3. Type in any part of the search term in any field(s) and/or use the pull-down menus

  4. Your search will return all the localities that match your search criteria.

  5. Clicking on a locality gives details about that locality and a list of the taxa found at that locality.

  6. On the taxon list page, clicking on 'taxon details' gives the taxonomic reference followed in the database and lists synonomies.

  7. At the top of the locality list you can click on 'Download these results' to get an Excel file that has detailed information about the taxa and localities.

  8. Or you can click 'Map these localities' to have all the localities plotted on a map. Clicking 'Map It' by each locality plots only that locality.

NOTE: You can search for localities by EPOCH, LAND-MAMMAL AGE, or AGE:

EPOCH: Returns all the localities assigned to the epoch or portion of the epoch you choose off the pull-down menu. Use this if you want a list of all the Pleistocene localities, for example.

LAND-MAMMAL AGE: Returns all the localities that fall within the land-mammal age you choose off the pull-down menu, even if they can be assigned to a finer division of time. Use this if you want a list of all the Blancan localities, for example.

AGE: Returns localities that are known to fully occur within the given portion of the time period you choose from the pull-down menu. Use this if you want a list of only the late early late Arikareean localities, for example.

INTERACTIVE MAPPING:

  1. Go to the Interactive Mapping Page. This plots all of the MIOMAP/FAUNMAP localities on a map of North America.

  2. Click any balloon to produce a pop-up menu of the point locality information.

  3. Click on 'Show Point Records' to create a list of the localities shown on the map.

  4. Use the boxes in the top right hand corner of the map to choose a different base map (e.g., satellite, photo, topo)

  5. To focus in on a particular set of localities, select the magnifying glass in the upper left corner of the page.
    — click on the map near the localities of interest
    — move mouse to produce a rectangle that covers the area of interest
    — click mouse again to zoom in on the selected localities

  6. Select the Options tab to the right of the map to choose different display options. These include:

Color by — Identifies via color coding how accurate the map coordinates were for each locality.

Label By — Labels the fossil localities on the map given the criteria selected.

Map Controls — Removes (or adds) the locality marker balloons from the map.

Download all record — Allows the user to download the data for all localties on the map as an Excel file.

Services and Analytical Functions — Gives the user a variety of different ways to analyze the data. For example, selecting the 'Estimate S Web Service' produces a downloadable table of the localities selected (or all localties on the map) that can be used in the diversity program Estimate S.

  7. For more information on how to use the mapping interface, click on the Help tab. From that menu, select the 'Help document' link.
