Research Interests

My research interests span much of the Phanerozoic and include work on the systematics, evolution, paleoecology, paleobiogeography, and whole-plant reconstruction of Devonian and Carboniferous land plants and floras, as well as Tertiary compression and chert floras, with emphasis being on the rarer monocotyledonous plants found in Tertiary floras. Since coming to Berkeley, my interests seem to be shifting more toward taxonomic revision of western North American Tertiary compression floras of California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, and the implications revised taxa have in the previous interpretations of floral composition, evolutionary and paleobiogeographic histories of plants, paleoclimate, and paleogeographic reconstructions.
