My research considers the evolution of skeletal tissues using molecular biology and embryology. My current research examines the development of the postcranial skeleton in the red-eared slider turtle to understand the developmental origin and morphogenetic regulation of the turtle shell. Using developmental genetics to study a non-model organism, I show new roles for tissues and genes in the evolution of morphology. I plan to continue this approach in my future research to investigate the evolution of the vertebrate dentition.
