Weathering and Erosional Processes

Presented by Lisa White
San Francisco State University

Interrelationships of climate and topography are important

  • Altitude affects rainfall and temperature, which in turn affects erosion and topogrqphy.
  • Mechanical erosion exposes new materials to chemical weathering and Chemical weathering increases ease of fragmentation of rocks.

Mechanical Weathering:

Physical fragmentation producing blocky, angular materials. (Click at left to zoom)

Angular edges often round through time.

Granites often weather in spheroidal sheets. (Click at left to zoom)
